Course description

Module English - Reading /Writing Skills 2 is an elective module in the specialized knowledge block in the university curriculum in English language. This module aims to provide language knowledge (vocabulary and grammar) and practice reading skills at level C1 according to the European reference framework, equivalent to IELTS 7.0 plus.

The module consists of 10 units with academic topics such as planetary change, beauty and perception, business, language and culture, resources and development, truth and falsehood, the future, v.v. to help students practice and consolidate knowledge and reading comprehension skills at the academic level, increase academic vocabulary, and develop thinking skills at level 4 according to the capacity rating scale of MIT.

In term of writing skill, ten units review some of the fundamentals of essay writing including the use of cohesive devices, basic structure of an essay, appositives, the characteristics of a good thesis statement; reminding how to write effective body paragraphs to support a thesis; introducing useful vocabulary for desribing similarities and differences, using initial phrase, expressing an opinion before covering the use of verbal phrases to add extra information to a sentence; refering to sources within a piece of writing before reviewing a number of methods that are useful for researching and note-taking; giving advice on how to choose a suitable topic, learning useful vocabulary for explaining the significance of evidence and results; describing data before going over the steps involved in summarizing a research study. Besides, apply all lessons by writing and revising a cause-effect essay, a persuasive essay, an evaluative essay, comparative essay, an opinion essay, expository essay; planning and writing an argumentative research paper; writing a summary of a famous research study.

Course requirements

Requirements for taking final /terminal exams

Students are allowed to take the final exam if their attendance score reaches 5 points or more (on the scale of 10).

Requirements for attending classes

Students are responsible for attending all classes. In case of absence from school due to force majeure reasons, sufficient and reasonable proofs must be provided. For each absence, 1 point will be deducted 1 point. Students who miss any classes more than 3 times, with or without reason, will be considered as failing to complete the course and have to re-register.

Students will be awarded points for constructive comments these points are added to attendance points and group assignments.

Groups who do not submit the group work will receive a score of 0 (zero). Late submissions will be deducted for each day of late submission.

Requirements for in-class behaviour

The course is conducted on the principle of respecting learners and lecturers. Any behaviour that affects the teaching and learning process is strictly prohibited.

Students must come to class on time. Students who are late more than 10 minutes after class starts will not be allowed to attend the class. Do not make noise and affect others during the learning process.

Laptops and tablets are only used for the purpose of taking notes for and calculating for lectures and exercises, absolutely forbidden to use for other purposes.
